Why/Benefits

ODEC is owned by 11 local not-for-profit electric distribution systems. Its nearly 400,000 consumer-members have been implementing demand response and energy efficiency programs for more than 25 years. Despite the fact that peak demand was reduced by an estimated 200 megawatts (MW) in 2007 through these concerted efforts, demand in the cooperative distribution area continues to increase. Due to this expected growth, ODEC announced in early 2008 that it was investigating the feasibility of locating a base load power generation facility in Virginia’s Surry County or Sussex County that would help meet its growing power needs.
